Sometimes Small Changes Have The Biggest Impact–Google Chrome Edition
Your systems improvements don’t have to be giant, throw-a-bomb-in-your-business changes. In fact, sometimes small changes can have the biggest impact.
One of my favorite small-change, big impact areas is creating efficiency using the Google Chrome web browser. It can yield major dividends considering how much time we all spend working from the web!
So, without further ado, I’d like to share a few of my favorite Google Chrome tips with you.
1. Tab Groups
Chrome allows you to organize your tabs into digital “folders” called Tab Groups. These groupings allow you to put similar tabs together and then expand or collapse the groups as you need to access them. If you collapse the Tab Groups when you’re not using them, your browser will go from this:
To this:
Why would you want to do this?
One word: compartmentalization. Just because you need to work on seven different projects in one day doesn’t mean you need all 75 relevant tabs open at once, staring you in the face. Putting the ones you’re not using into these “folders” reduces overwhelm and allows you to focus.
2. Saved Tab Groups
You know what’s even better than creating folders for the seven projects you’re working on? Removing them from your view entirely.
With Saved Tab Groups, you can remove the entire “folder” of tabs from your browser and store it away for later. Talk about a way to reduce overwhelm!
With the entire Tab Group hidden away, you can focus on what’s in front of you and stop thinking about the six other projects waiting for you.
Why would you want to do this?
Focus is everything in a distracted world. A good majority of us (myself included!) are either ADHD or show up like an ADHD person. And let’s face it–small business owners and employees have a whole lot going on.
It’s hard not to think about what you need to do next when it's staring you right in the face, so remove the distractions and find the focus you crave!
3. Profiles
Has Chrome ever asked you to sign in or sync your browser with a Google account? If you ignored it or said yes but weren’t fully aware of what you were doing, let’s chat about Profiles in Chrome.
Profiles allow you to log in to your browser using a Google account. And if you have multiple Google accounts, you can create multiple profiles that are all linked to each of your Google accounts.
Why would you want to do this?
Each profile has its own cache, cookies, bookmarks, extensions, and more, allowing you to further compartmentalize your digital desktop, stay organized, and make sure you’re not mixing things up as you buzz about your day. You can separate things like:
Work vs. personal account(s)
Your account(s) vs. client accounts
Two separate people’s accounts who use the same computer
Additionally, you can also access your exact browser setup from any device–as long as you log into Chrome on that device. I can’t tell you how many times this came in handy for me when I encountered issues with my old laptop right before calls and had to quickly pivot to a different device.
I could go on. Chrome is a powerful browser with features that can be a game-changer for reducing overwhelm, improving focus, and making you more efficient as you move through your day.
A small amount of time spent learning how to best utilize it can yield major returns–all without having to throw a bomb into your business.
